Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards are in Kurtatsch, South Tyrol, on hillside sites at 240–350 m above sea level. The plots face south and southeast. Soils are mainly limestone and gravel. Planting density is 7,000 vines per hectare, and the vines are around 20 years old.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks. Their porous structure allows a minimal but steady supply of oxygen, which keeps the character of the variety and the vineyards intact and gives a wine that is open, approachable and fresh, with a rich aroma. Malolactic fermentation, which softens the flavour, takes place in small oak barrels.
Ageing
After malolactic fermentation the wine ages on fine lees in the same small oak barrels for 10 months. This develops the bright aroma and adds subtle, refined notes of wood. It then returns to concrete tanks for a further 2 months before bottling, and rests for 5 more months in the winery's cellars. The text gives a storage potential of 7–10 years.
Tasting profile
A rich, full-bodied red with a generous flavour. The aroma is a refined berry fruit with a touch of black pepper. The winemaking aims at the complexity, structure and elegance of the variety.
Serving and pairing
Suited to any meat dish or cheese.
Label / history
The wine belongs to Tiefenbrunner's "Turmhof" range. According to the text, the range's grapes come from several slopes at elevations of up to 900 m, and its wines age on their lees for several months in wooden barrels.
