Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese grows on the cool, northeastern slopes of Montosoli, where Vincenzo Abbruzzese has cultivated the vines for decades. The old vines have deep roots that can reach water retained after spring rainfall. During the dry summer of 2020, careful canopy management protected the grapes from sunburn.
Vinification
Vincenzo Abbruzzese delayed the 2020 harvest rather than picking before the September rains, allowing the grapes to complete ripening in cooler conditions.
Tasting profile
The 2020 is elegant, deep, charming and approachable, with less power than the 2019 and 2016 vintages. The intense nose combines ripe cherry and wild berries with floral notes and the distinctive minerality of the Montosoli terroir. Silky tannins and lively acidity shape a harmonious, balanced palate.
Vintage notes
A mild winter replenished water reserves. Spring remained dry and steady until June, when 154 mm of rain encouraged lush foliage. Summer then brought 64 consecutive rainless days, a drought unlike any Vincenzo Abbruzzese had previously experienced, with daytime temperatures reaching 40 °C. Cooler nights preserved freshness in the grapes, while cool nights and occasional rain at the end of August renewed the vines before the delayed harvest. The resulting wine is more approachable and less powerful than the 2019 and 2016 vintages.
