Storia
A family estate
Valdicava has remained in family ownership since its foundation. Its historical narrative is framed less through dated milestones than through continuity: approximately fifty years of consistent methods and a coherent philosophy centered on the vineyard, the natural balance of the vines and the individual identity of its Sangiovese.
Present stewardship
Vincenzo Abbruzzese is identified as the estate’s owner. His work is closely associated with Valdicava’s dedication to the vineyards and with the character of its Sangiovese from the northern side of Montalcino. PierFilippo Abbruzzese is the named contact at the Montalcino estate.
Terroir
Montosoli and northern Montalcino
Valdicava is situated in the Montosoli area on the northern side of Montalcino. The estate associates Montosoli with wines that balance body and aromatic expression.
Latitude and climatic influences
The vineyards lie at latitude 43°. Their growing conditions are shaped by the warmth carried from the nearby Tirreno Sea, the protective barrier formed by Monte Amiata, the cooling influence of surrounding woodland, breezes and moderate rainfall. Together, these factors support the gradual development of fragrant, fully mature Sangiovese grapes.
The estate regards Montalcino as a place where Sangiovese can acquire particular depth, concentration and richness. Its approach is intended to retain the individual characteristics created by this combination of location and climate—the estate’s genius loci.
Vinificazione
Viticulture is guided by respect for the balance of nature and by the objective of preserving the individual character of the estate’s Sangiovese. Daily vineyard work focuses on maintaining the equilibrium of the vines. The estate’s longstanding methods favor naturally grown grapes in deliberately small quantities, with particularly close attention paid during harvest.
Biodiversity, harmony between farming and place, and practical agricultural knowledge form part of this approach. The land is presented as an environment shared by people, vines and animals rather than solely as a production resource.
Valdicava’s production philosophy begins in the vineyard, with small quantities of Sangiovese grown while maintaining the vines’ natural equilibrium. Particular care is applied during harvest.
In the cellar, the specifically identified practices are fermentation with native yeasts, temperature control and exacting cleanliness. Experience accumulated across approximately fifty years supports an approach intended to retain the singular character created by the estate’s vineyards rather than reproduce a standardized style.
Filosofia
Genius loci
Valdicava’s central principle is the preservation of the estate’s genius loci: the spirit and identity arising from its particular position in Montosoli. Rather than suppressing differences, the estate seeks to maintain the individual characteristics of its wines and elevate the qualities conferred by the place.
Farming in balance with nature
Wine is understood as beginning in the vineyard. Daily work is organized around respect for natural balance, the equilibrium of the vines and the distinctive character of Sangiovese. This outlook brings together biodiversity, harmony with the surrounding environment and knowledge acquired through agricultural experience.
Custodianship
The estate presents itself as a custodian of land shaped by people, wine and animals. Its identity also encompasses an attachment to Tuscany, its culture and art, its landscapes and the richness of its natural environment. Agricultural knowledge is paired with close attention to the inherent vocation of both the farmer and the territory.
