Label / history
The name Prelius refers to Lake Prelius, an ancient lake that occupied the site of the present winery during the Roman Empire.
Castello di Volpaia was built in the 11th century as a fortification on the border between Florence and Siena. Two of its six historic towers and part of the original defensive walls survive, while the layout of the buildings and walls in the village of Volpaia remains largely in its original form.
Volpaia is also the surname of a family whose members Lorenzo and Benvenuto della Volpaia invented various mechanisms during the Renaissance. One of the brothers was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci. Their inventions are now held in science museums in Florence, Chicago and Greenwich.
