Label / history
The name “Prelius” refers to the ancient Lake Prelius, which covered the land where the winery now stands during the Roman Empire.
Castello di Volpaia was built in the 11th century as a fortified stronghold on the border between Florence and Siena. Two of its original six towers and part of the defensive walls remain, while the layout and walls of the village of Volpaia have been preserved in nearly their original form.
Volpaia is also the name of a family whose members Lorenzo and Benvenuto della Volpaia became known during the Renaissance as inventors of mechanical devices. One of the brothers was a friend of Leonardo da Vinci. Their inventions are now held in science museums in Florence, Chicago and Greenwich.
