Vineyard and terroir
Doppiozeta is a Nero d’Avola cru drawn from three estate parcels—Piscina, Sopra Navel and Mandorleto—at 95–130 m, with south-east exposure. The medium-textured soil is calcareous and mineral, with a substantial rocky component. The 14–19-year-old vines are head-pruned in the traditional bush form at 5,550 vines per hectare. Viticulture is organic and was described as being in conversion for the 2022 release, with parcel-specific vineyard work intended to express the biodiversity of the three sites.
Grapes
100% Nero d’Avola.
Vinification
The 2022 grapes were picked by hand from 19 September. Fermentation occurred naturally in small stainless-steel tanks without cultured yeast or temperature control, followed by more than 30 days of skin contact. Malolactic fermentation took place spontaneously in oak. The wine was bottled without filtration.
Ageing
More than 16 months in 500 L, medium-toast tonneaux, half of them new, followed by more than four months of finishing in concrete tanks.
Technical data
The 2022 has 14.11% alcohol and total acidity of 5.42%. It was bottled in November 2024, with release scheduled for September 2026. Production was 19,200 bottles in 750 ml, 1.5 L and 3 L formats. The first vintage was 2006, and ageing potential exceeds 20 years.
Tasting profile
An intense wine with pronounced spice and fruit aromas, combining a powerful structure with elegance.
Vintage notes
The 2022 winter was colder and drier than average, including some frost. Mild spring conditions supported vegetative growth and fruit set before heat waves arrived in May. Summer brought temperatures above 40°C, sharp temperature swings and light September rain, delaying harvest by about ten days. The resulting wines were considered elegant; the vintage evaluation was “Good.” Rainfall from 1 April through 30 September was 183 mm, while the summed average daily temperature index for the same period was 4,299°C.
