Baden-Württemberg wine stocks decline 4.4%

Inventories held by wine producers and traders totaled 2.52 million hectoliters on 31 July 2026, down 4.4% from the previous year and 5.8% below the 10-year average. German wine represented 92.8% of the total.

Inventories at the close of the wine year

At the end of the wine year on 31 July 2026, producers and wine-trade businesses in Baden-Württemberg held 2.52 million hectoliters. The Statistisches Landesamt Baden-Württemberg released the figures on Monday, 2 November.1

Stocks were 115000 hectoliters lower than a year earlier, a decrease of 4.4%. Average inventories during 2016–2025 were 2.67 million hectoliters, so the 2026 total was lower by 155000 hectoliters, or 5.8%, than that 10-year average.1

The official data provide wineries, cooperatives and beverage-sector buyers in southwestern Germany with a measure of regional availability as they consider supply and purchasing requirements.1

Composition and ownership of stocks

Red wine accounted for 62.1% of stored wine, while white wine represented 37.9%.1

Wine originating in the European Union comprised 99.9% of inventories, compared with 0.1% from countries outside the EU. German wine alone supplied 92.8% of the total.1

Wines with a protected designation of origin, including quality and Prädikat wines, made up 90.4% of stocks. Landwein carrying a protected geographical indication represented a further 1.9%, with wines lacking a geographical indication forming the balance.1

Producers held 87.9% of all inventories in the cellars and storage sites of wine-growing businesses, winegrowers’ cooperatives and processing companies. Wholesalers and wine merchants controlled the remaining 12.1%.1

Survey scope and significance

The annual survey measures inventories at the end of the wine year. Wine-register authorities collect the information, which the state statistical office then compiles. Coverage includes wine-growing businesses, cooperatives, wholesalers and wine-trade companies holding at least 100 hectoliters.1

Baden-Württemberg is a major German wine-producing state, and its inventory figures show how much wine remains after the marketing year. Lower stocks do not by themselves establish changes in prices or sales, but they can give producers, distributors and beverage buyers an early view of regional supply conditions.1
