Burgundy’s 2026 harvest: an early start after a hot summer

Burgundy’s grape harvest began as early as 8 August, with parcels destined for Crémant in the Mâconnais. The first picking for still wines started after 15 August. The official report notes healthy grapes and encouraging first juices; a final assessment of volume is still to come.

In its September review, the BIVB, Burgundy’s wine trade association, described the season as exceptionally early. The last bunches arrived at wineries shortly before mid-September. Harvesting spread gradually across the region’s different areas.1

Heat, drought and winter water reserves

According to the BIVB, a mild, rainy winter helped replenish soil moisture. The season then brought spring frosts, rapid vine growth, a short flowering period and repeated heatwaves. The association recorded around 60 days above 30 °C and a marked lack of rainfall; overall, however, the vineyards withstood these conditions.1

A report from Maranges by Chris Howard for Decanter, published on 27 October, adds a local perspective. Howard describes green vines after a very hot summer and attributes their condition to moisture reserves accumulated over 2 wet winters. Winemaker Pablo Chevrot links the availability of water to fractured limestone and the underlying marl, which vine roots can reach.2

Maranges as an example within the wider region

Maranges lies at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune and encompasses 3 villages: Cheilly-lès-Maranges, Dezize-lès-Maranges and Sampigny-lès-Maranges. Pinot Noir forms the basis of local wines, with Chardonnay accounting for a smaller share. The BIVB’s official appellation profile lists 7 Premier Cru climats.3

Howard calls the completed harvest one of the earliest in 7 centuries of Burgundy records. In his article, this description accompanies a visit to Maranges. It is a journalistic characterization; the specific regional dates in the official review give a more precise indication of how unusual the season’s calendar was.2

What is already known about quality

The BIVB reports healthy grapes and first juices showing richness, balance and freshness. The association plans to refine its official volume estimate in mid-November; the preliminary expectation is for a result below the 10-year average. These are early observations of the harvest, and the finished wines have yet to develop.1
