Heineken places all its South African wine labels under strategic review

The review covers Heineken Beverages’ full South African wine portfolio, including Nederburg and JC Le Roux, as the group addresses market-share losses and integration difficulties following its 2023 acquisitions.

Heineken is reviewing all the South African wine labels held by Heineken Beverages, including Nederburg and JC Le Roux. On 28 October 2026, The Heineken Company chief financial officer Harold van den Broek told analysts that the portfolio was under strategic review and that the group was not making hasty decisions. He did not say that any wine assets would be sold.1

Heineken Beverages was formed after the group acquired Distell and Namibia Breweries in 2023 in a €2.2 billion transaction. Van den Broek linked the current difficulties to losses in market share and complications in integrating the acquired businesses, while saying that Heineken was working to restore volumes in South Africa.1

Pressure on the wine portfolio

According to Darno Van Dyk, head of Heineken Beverages’ wine category in South Africa, wine is operating against a difficult backdrop of financially constrained consumers, high costs and intense competition across the broader alcohol market. He said the company sees scope to build stronger brands and value from its portfolio, which also includes Durbanville Hills and Zonnebloem.1

Van Dyk said more could be done to strengthen the group’s core still-wine labels and give consumers clearer reasons to choose higher-priced products within their ranges. He also expressed optimism about the 2026 vintage. The strategic review leaves the future role of the portfolio under consideration, but Heineken has not announced a disposal or another structural decision.1
