Italy accounted for 51% of US organic wine imports by value in 2025

US imports of Italian organic wine reached €35.6 million in 2025, while their value increased by 2.2% year on year in the first eight months of 2026, according to research by Nomisma for Ita.Bio.

Imports and consumer interest

Italy supplied 51% of the value of organic wine imported by the United States in 2025. The findings were presented on October 30 in the first 2026 focus by Ita.Bio, a platform promoted by the Italian Trade Agency with support from FederBio and research by Nomisma. US imports of Italian organic wine totaled €35.6 million in 2025; in the first eight months of 2026, their value rose by 2.2% from the same period of 2025.1

Nomisma reported that 19% of respondents drink Italian organic wine. Among them, 71% considered it better than US or French alternatives. About 1 in 4 respondents who do not currently purchase it said they would be willing to try it, and 64% of that group would do so in an Italian restaurant.1

Price and availability barriers

Among respondents who purchase organic products but not Italian organic products, 40% cited high prices, 37% limited availability in their usual stores and 30% difficulty identifying Italian organic products in shops or restaurants. The survey covered 1,000 people aged 18–65 who are responsible for household food purchases and live in New York or California; the report cautioned that the results should not be generalized to all US consumers.1

Different labeling rules

European organic certification does not automatically allow a wine to be marketed in the United States as “organic wine.” Under US rules, wines with added sulfites cannot use that designation. Wines meeting the relevant standards may instead be labeled “made with organic grapes,” with sulfur dioxide up to 100 parts per million in the finished wine, but without the USDA Organic seal. Labels must also comply with Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau requirements.1
