Vini d’Italia 2027: 540 Tre Bicchieri and Winery of the Year title for Tommasi

Gambero Rosso has presented the new edition of its wine guide: 540 wines received the top Tre Bicchieri award, 32 more than the previous year. The Winery of the Year title went to Tommasi Family Estates of Valpolicella.

The awards ceremony took place on 25 October at the La Nuvola convention centre in Rome. Gambero Rosso highlights 54 estates that received Tre Bicchieri for the first time. The first-time winners may include both young projects and long-established wineries.1

Why Tommasi was recognised

In selecting the Winery of the Year, the editors highlighted the family company’s development beyond its native Valpolicella. Founded in 1902, the estate began a new phase in 1997 by acquiring a property in Pitigliano, Tuscany. Projects in other Italian regions were later added to its portfolio.2

Among them, Gambero Rosso names Casisano in Montalcino, Paternoster on Vulture and Ammura on Etna. According to the award’s authors, the company stands out for its ability to work across different territories while preserving their distinctive characteristics. Tommasi remains family-run, with the fourth generation now involved in the business.2

For readers of the guide, this award provides a separate reference point at producer level. Tre Bicchieri are awarded to individual wines, whereas the Cantina dell’Anno title recognises an estate and its development. The bottle’s full name, vintage and appellation therefore remain relevant when considering the results.1 · 2

50 award-winning wines under €15

The winners include 50 wines that, according to Gambero Rosso, cost less than €15 in Italian wine shops. Prices may differ in other countries and between individual retailers.1

A further 194 awards are Tre Bicchieri Verdi, given to wines from estates with certified organic or biodynamic farming. The publication stresses that quality is determined through tasting, while the green designation supplements the result with information about the producer.1

How to read the new edition

The guide covers 2,614 producers and more than 23,000 wines, according to Italia a Tavola. In addition to Tre Bicchieri, it includes 13 special awards. Among the winners named by the publication are Masciarelli’s Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Marina Cvetic S. Martino Rosso Riserva 2022 as red wine of the year, Alta Mora’s Etna Bianco Arrigo 2023 as white wine of the year and Ferghettina’s Franciacorta Non Dosato 33 Riserva 2018 in the sparkling wine category.3
