Vineyard and terroir

The grapes grow on south-facing hillsides in Terre di Franciacorta, Lombardy, where the vines receive abundant warm sunlight. This small, densely hilly area is bordered by the Oglio River, the foothills of the Alps, Lake Iseo and the Brescia–Bergamo motorway.

The blend comprises 95% Chardonnay and 5% Pinot Bianco.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness. Traditional methods are used, including low-temperature maceration.

Label / history

One explanation traces the name Franciacorta to a religious order that lived in the area between the 11th and 13th centuries. The monks called their lands “curtes francae”, meaning “tax-free territory”, because they were exempt from Brescia’s tax law.

Another account links the name to the French king Charlemagne. Before campaigning against the Lombards, he promised to return home for Saint Dionigi’s Day. When the day found him near Rodengo-Saiano, he reportedly proclaimed the area a “miniature France”—Franciacorta—to keep his word.
