About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Chardonnay grows on Mount Orfano. The vineyard, on land that belonged to a monastery for centuries, is surrounded by olive groves and oak forests. Its varied soils include carbonate-rich sandy loam and deep, highly fertile clay-limestone soils.
Vinification
The wine is made by a traditional method, with fermentation in small oak barrels.
Ageing
It ages in oak barrels for 12 months. Bottling takes place in the second spring after harvest, followed by another year in the winery’s cellars before release.
Tasting profile
Refreshing and rounded.
Label / history
One explanation traces the name Franciacorta to the curtes francae, lands held by a religious order between the 11th and 13th centuries and exempt from Brescia’s taxation laws. Another associates it with Charlemagne: after a campaign against the Lombards prevented him from returning home for Saint Dionigi’s Day, he is said to have declared the area around Rodengo-Saiano a miniature France.
