History

A villa in Bolgheri

Campo alle Comete occupies an early-20th-century villa in the heart of Bolgheri. The property lies near Castagneto Carducci, within the Maremma Livornese and the Costa degli Etruschi. Its identity draws on the landscape, the area’s Etruscan past and an imaginative visual language built around stars and comets.

2016: acquisition by Feudi di San Gregorio

Feudi di San Gregorio acquired Campo alle Comete in 2016 as the Capaldo family expanded its activity beyond Campania and explored the wine potential of other Italian regions. The estate became the Tuscan winery within the Tenute Capaldo group of projects. Its operating company, Feudi Toscana–Campo alle Comete Società Agricola, is based in Castagneto Carducci and is wholly owned by Feudi di San Gregorio.

The move into Bolgheri brought an established winemaking philosophy into dialogue with a denomination distinguished by the quality of its sites and its community of producers. The project’s stated ambition is to understand that local richness and, over time, make an individual contribution through the experience and values developed by the Capaldo family.

Development of the vineyards

The estate subsequently planted new vineyards below the medieval Torre di Donoratico. This four-hectare site, positioned on one of Bolgheri’s higher points, was developed with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. It became the source of the estate’s Torre alle Comete project.

The wider vineyard holding has continued to develop. Group reporting identified 21 ha in 2021 and 26 ha in later reports, while the current estate presentation gives 27 ha. The portfolio now encompasses Bolgheri DOC and Toscana IGT wines from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Vermentino.

A visual identity between reality and imagination

Illustrator Nicoletta Ceccoli portrayed Campo alle Comete as a place poised between dream and reality. Elements of her painting were adopted across the wine labels, linking the estate’s early-20th-century villa, vineyards and cellar with its recurring imagery of stars, comets, poetry and imagination.

Terroir

Campo alle Comete lies at Castagneto Carducci in the Maremma Livornese, along the Costa degli Etruschi. The Tyrrhenian Sea is only a short distance from the vineyards, while the surrounding hills form an amphitheatre-like setting around the area. Light, maritime proximity and the shape of the landscape are central elements of the estate’s description of its environment.

Torre di Donoratico

A particularly distinctive sector lies below the ruins of the medieval Torre di Donoratico. The tower stands a few kilometres from the winery on one of Bolgheri’s higher points, overlooking the sea and the denomination. Four hectares of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc grow here. The vines receive abundant light and breezes rising from the sea, while their soils are described as notably rich and varied.

The estate cultivates 27 ha of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc and Vermentino. Its most clearly defined vineyard initiative is the planting of four hectares below the Torre di Donoratico. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc were selected for this elevated, maritime-influenced site.

The winemaking and maturation spaces form a circular structure inspired by ancient Etruscan tombs. Its exterior panels have darkened through contact with the atmosphere, giving the building the appearance of an observatory or spacecraft beside the early-20th-century villa.

Inside, barriques are arranged in a semicircle together with approximately 160 tonneaux used to mature the future Bolgheri wines. The cellar’s architecture, barrel layout and imagery were conceived as a continuation of the estate’s dialogue between the Etruscan past, the Bolgheri landscape and its recurring celestial theme.

Philosophy

Campo alle Comete presents itself as the meeting point between an established winemaking philosophy and Bolgheri, a territory valued for the vocation and quality of its sites and producers. Its long-term aim is to absorb the territory’s richness and contribute an individual interpretation built on experience accumulated elsewhere by the Capaldo family.

The project joins tradition and technical experience with poetry and imagination. Its identity is deliberately welcoming and evocative: the vineyards, early-20th-century villa, Etruscan-inspired cellar and star-filled visual language are intended to make wine, art and landscape parts of a single experience.

Within the broader Tenute Capaldo vision, the guiding principles are long-term thinking, attachment to place, culture, respect for consumers and the production of quality wine with respect for each estate’s territory.
