About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Monfort's vineyards lie in sandy soils at the foot of the Alps, at 300 metres above sea level, in the Val di Cembra valley. The climate is relatively cool. The vineyards are very old and once belonged to the bishop of the city of Trentino. The vines are cultivated with respect for the natural biological balance and with a strong focus on quality.
Grapes
The wine is made from selected Pinot Grigio grapes. The variety is a signature grape of Trentino, Italy's northernmost region. It was brought there from Germany in the early twentieth century and adapted well to the cool climate.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand and gently pressed at the winery. They stay in contact with the skins in the press for about one night, which gives the wine its salmon colour. The must then goes to steel tanks and is fermented with selected yeasts until the desired sugar level is reached.
Ageing
The wine spends a short time on the lees in steel tanks. It is then chilled and bottled.
Tasting profile
Salmon colour. Pleasant fruity aroma and a soft, refreshing taste.
Serving and pairing
Versatile enough to pair with most dishes, and also suited as an aperitif.
Vintage notes
2021 was a challenging year in Trentino-Alto Adige. The winter was mostly sunny but very cold. Spring temperatures rose only briefly and occasionally, which slowed the vines' development. The warm, sunny start to summer made up for the delay in the growing cycle. July and August were unsettled, and the harvest began relatively late. A rainy September was a serious challenge for winegrowers, but the results were impressive.
Label / history
Cantine Monfort was founded by Giovanni Simoni, grandfather of the current owner, Lorenzo. The winery is in Lavis, north of Trento, and makes white and red wines. Its newer wines take part in the "Vini dell'Angelo" ("Wines of the Angel") project, a recently introduced Trentino quality label for wines made from old, disappearing local grape varieties found in the province of Trentino.
