Vineyard and terroir
The grapes are grown in the hills of southwestern Sicily.
Vinification
The grapes undergo cold maceration, then ferment in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature.
Ageing
The wine spends a short time in neutral vessels, followed by 3 months in bottle in the winery's cellars.
Tasting profile
Not a light, charming rosé: it has the character of a red, a true "iron lady" of the rosé world. It is confident, vivid and full of personality, and works as a companion through a whole dinner, from beginning to end.
Label / history
The label carries a portrait of Lumera, an idealized heroine of Sicilian poetry who symbolizes the joy and fullness of life.
Donnafugata means "woman who fled" in Italian. According to legend, Queen Maria Carolina escaped from Naples and found refuge in a town in the heart of the Santa Margherita Belice valley, in a palace beneath the starry sky. The story inspired the image of a woman's head with hair blowing in the wind that appears on many of the winery's labels.
