About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Vigna Kastelaz is a precisely delimited and mapped single vineyard overlooking Tramin. Its narrowly terraced slopes exceed a 63% incline, face fully south and rise from 330 to 380 m. Loose, layered limestone is interspersed with post-glacial sand, granite and porphyry. The exposure supplies abundant sunshine, while altitude and strong winds bring cool evening temperatures. Yields are very limited.
Grapes
100% Gewürztraminer.
Vinification
Fully ripe grapes are carefully selected and harvested entirely by hand in two passes. The crushed berries receive six hours of cold maceration before pressing. The juice is clarified by refrigeration and natural sedimentation, then inoculated with selected yeasts and fermented at a controlled 18 °C.
Ageing
The young wine remains on its lees for several months.
Technical data
2024: 14.00% alcohol, 5.5 g/L total acidity and 5.2 g/L residual sugar. Available in 0.75 L bottles. Estimated ageing potential is 5–10 years.
Tasting profile
Rich golden yellow. The complex bouquet is elegant and mineral, with rose and lychee aromas and a subtle background of acacia honey. The palate is finely structured and complex, balancing stimulating acidity with harmonious spicy freshness. The finish is delicate, vibrant and juicy, emphasizing finesse and character.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 11–13 °C. Pair with shellfish, crab, lobster, Asian dishes or blue cheese.
Vintage notes
The 2024 vintage combined an unsettled, rainy spring around flowering with a cool start to summer that required close vineyard attention. July and August were dry, sunny and hot, producing balanced pH, acidity and sugar. The crop was smaller, but quality was excellent.
Label / history
The additional denomination “Vigna” identifies Kastelaz as a precisely demarcated and cartographically recorded single vineyard. Its rare full-south exposure and extreme slope define this Gewürztraminer’s identity. The site is used exclusively for two estate wines, including Gewürztraminer Vigna Kastelaz.
