About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Nero di Nubi is made from Pinot Nero grown on a 2.5-hectare historic parcel in the Castelnuovo Berardenga area, north-east of Siena. Introductory text places the vineyard on the highest part of Farnetella at 550 metres above sea level, while the detailed Italian description associates it with Podere Molinuzzo. The soils consist predominantly of sand and silt, with a substantial rocky and calcareous component. Planting density is 5,400 vines per hectare.
The Italian description identifies French cuttings planted in 1998, whereas the English version dates the planting to 1986. The two versions also give different training systems: simple Guyot in Italian and a vertically trained spurred cordon in English.
Grapes
100% Pinot Nero.
Vinification
The grapes are picked entirely by hand into 20 kg boxes. Vinification uses both partially crushed grapes and whole clusters. Maceration lasts approximately 15–18 days, with the temperature kept below 28–30°C.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12–15 months in small oak casks. After blending and bottling, it ages for at least another 8–10 months in bottle before release.
Tasting profile
The wine is pale ruby red with orange highlights. Its aromatic profile combines Pinot Nero fruit and spice; the English description adds game, wild berries and vanilla. The palate is fragrant, with fine tannins integrated with balsamic notes. The English profile characterises the tannins as slightly green and links them with vanilla and toasted oak. The finish is fine, elegant and persistent.
Vintage notes
The 2013 wine was described with autumnal aromas of woodland undergrowth, dark fruit and faded violet, followed by a fine, elegant palate.
