About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from the Sciaranuova vineyard at Castiglione di Sicilia, in the province of Catania. The vines stand at 840–860 metres above sea level on the lava flow created by Etna’s 1614 eruption. This eruption continued for ten years and is described as the longest recorded in the volcano’s history.
The well-exposed site has black lava-sand soils that are particularly rich in minerals and contain abundant large fragments. Woodland and more recent lava flows surround the vineyard.
The vines are trained on espalier using spurred-cordon and double-spurred-cordon pruning. Viticulture follows organic-farming criteria and SOStain® protocols. Wild-flower ground cover supplies organic matter and supports soil microfauna. Plant-health measures include small quantities of sulphur and copper, beneficial insects, mating disruption, and natural protective materials such as zeolite, kaolin and plant extracts.

Tasting profile
An intensely aromatic mountain red with an elegant structure. Incense, medicinal herbs, hibiscus and wild fennel shape the aromatic profile. Wild fruit and currants bring sweetness and generosity, complemented by beeswax and further incense notes. The tannins are compact and dense yet elegant, while a faint saline quality carries the finish and encourages another sip.
Label / history
The name commemorates Etna’s 1614 eruption, which lasted ten years. The Sciaranuova vines grow directly on the lava flow formed during that eruption. The first vintage was 2010.
Recognition
The 2021 vintage received 91 points from Wine Enthusiast. The 2020 vintage received 93 points from James Suckling, 93 from Wine Advocate Robert Parker and 94 from Wine Enthusiast. The 2019 vintage received 94 points from James Suckling, a WineHunter Awards Oro at the Merano Wine Festival and the Corona from Vini Buoni d’Italia.
