About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The fruit comes from the south-facing Ragne vineyard, at 250–350 metres above sea level. Its predominantly loamy soils contain layers of sand and silty clay, with a small proportion of gravel. The vines average 20–25 years of age.

Vinification

Selected grapes are destemmed and gently pressed, then macerated on their skins for 16–18 days under temperature-controlled conditions. Malolactic fermentation is usually completed by the end of December.

Ageing

The wine matures for 30 months in small French oak barrels and medium-sized Slovenian oak barrels, followed by six months in bottle.

Tasting profile

The aroma is complex. The palate is powerful, rich, warm, layered and finely balanced.

Label / history

The Gattavecchi family has tended vines and made wine for four generations. The winery was completely destroyed in a bombing raid in 1944 and subsequently rebuilt through the efforts of Valentine Gattavecchi, beginning a new era for the company. The restored Simonetti-Baroncelli cellars and vineyards had belonged to monks from the “Padri Servit” monastery as early as the 12th century. The estate is now run by Valentine’s children—Luca, Gionata and Daniella—with guidance from their mother, Gianna.
