About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The vineyards lie at 280 m above sea level, with southeast exposure. Their loamy soils contain layers of sand and silty clay mixed with pebbles. The vines average 20–25 years of age. Moderate year-round temperatures and the nearby lakes and mountains create a favourable microclimate.

Grapes

The blend is predominantly Sangiovese, with a small proportion of Canaiolo Nero.

Vinification

Carefully selected grapes are destemmed and gently pressed, followed by 16–18 days of skin maceration at a controlled temperature. Malolactic fermentation is usually completed in December.

Ageing

The wine matures for two years in medium-sized Slovenian oak casks and small French oak barrels, followed by six months in bottle.

Tasting profile

Refined and elegant.

Label / history

The Gattavecchi family has tended vines and produced wine for four generations. After the winery was completely destroyed by bombing in 1944, Valentina Gattavecchi led its rebuilding. The Simoncelli-Baroncelli cellars and vineyards, owned by monks from the “Padri Servit” monastery as early as the 12th century, were restored. The estate is now run by Valentina’s children, Luca, Gionata and Daniella, with guidance from their mother, Gianna.
