About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Vigna Herbsthöfl is a precisely delimited single vineyard in Mazon and the highest, coolest and northernmost parcel of the Barthenau estate. It lies beside woodland on a northwest-facing slope with a 30% gradient. Reduced sunlight and lower temperatures allow slow ripening and preserve high natural acidity. The low-fertility soil consists of calcareous, sandy mixed glacial deposits, encouraging the roots to explore deeply for nutrients.

The parcel was planted with selected vines from Vigna Roccolo, carrying the genetics of Alto Adige’s oldest vineyard into a site with a distinct character.

Grapes

Pinot Nero. Alto Adige DOC Riserva.

Vinification

The grapes are entirely hand-picked and fully destemmed. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks with remontage, or pump-overs.

Ageing

The wine matures in barriques, then concrete tanks, followed by bottle maturation.

Tasting profile

A fresh and vibrant Pinot Nero with lively acidity. Its colour is lighter and its expression more delicate and restrained, while retaining the power and depth associated with Mazon. The site also contributes finesse and a clear varietal expression.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 14–16 °C with red meat, lamb or game.

Label / history

Vigna Herbsthöfl was vinified separately for the first time in 2022 and is the newest addition to the estate’s Vigna wines from Mazon.
