About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The grapes come from Le Sondraie at Tenuta La Garzaia, on the northern edge of the Bolgheri appellation. The vineyard lies at 10 m a.s.l. The technical sheet describes clay- and limestone-rich soil with a small proportion of silt; the current Wine Club description instead calls it deep, well-structured sandy-clay soil with little limestone.

Grapes

The 2023 blend is 70% Cabernet Franc and 30% Merlot.

Vinification

Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, with periodic pump-overs and délestage. The wine remains on the skins for approximately 21 days. Malolactic fermentation is completed before maturation.

Ageing

The wine matures for 18 months in French oak barriques, divided between 70% new oak and 30% second-use barrels.

Technical data

The 2023 vintage has 15.5% alcohol. Recommended serving temperature is 18–20 °C.

Tasting profile

Deep ruby red. The bouquet combines Mediterranean scrub with ripe red fruit. The palate is balanced and structured, with velvety tannins: Merlot contributes softness and roundness, while Cabernet Franc supplies backbone, body, aromatic complexity, and structure. The finish is long and persistent.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18–20 °C. Pair with flavorful or spicy Italian dishes, rich sauces, and aged cheeses.

Vintage notes

The 2023 growing season brought hot, sunny days and stable conditions. Heavy rain at the end of August replenished water reserves and relieved heat stress, supporting optimal grape ripening.

Label / history

Introduced in 2026, this was Ruffino’s first Bolgheri Superiore and was conceived by winemaker Olga Fusari. The name Garzaia evokes Bolgheri and the natural places where several species of heron nest.
