About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Atis is assembled from selected micro-parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon, Rebo and Cabernet Franc in the estate vineyards on the first slopes of Segalari Hill. The vineyards occupy a small east–west valley crossed by the Fossa di Bolgheri stream. This is described as one of the cooler sites in the area, with pronounced summer differences between daytime and night-time temperatures. The Mediterranean climate is mild, dry and windy.
The soils are very deep and alluvial, principally sandy-clay, with more clay-rich outcrops and a medium to rich abundance of pebbles. The vineyards are managed through sustainable integrated-viticulture practices.
Grapes
Cabernet Sauvignon, Rebo and Cabernet Franc. Rebo has progressively replaced Merlot because the latter became less well suited to the site as the climate changed. Rebo is an Italian crossing of Merlot and Teroldego developed during the twentieth century.
Vinification
Each homogeneous vineyard micro-parcel is harvested and processed separately, with the aim of retaining the territorial character of the selected grapes. The 2022 harvest took place from the middle to the end of September.
Ageing
The wine spends about 24 months in non-new wood on its lees, with weekly stirring. It is clarified through a series of rackings and is not filtered. After the final blending of the parcels, it rests for 4 months in steel and then matures in bottle for at least 12 months.
Technical data
Vintage 2022: 15.50% alcohol; 5.72 g/L total acidity; 0.65 g/L residual sugar; 31.9 g/L dry extract; 0.082 g/L total sulphur dioxide; energy value 377 kJ / 90 kcal per 100 ml. The wine is dry and full-bodied.
Tasting profile
The aromatic profile combines red and dark fruit—currant, blueberry, blackberry and morello cherry—with violet, liquorice, clove, cinnamon, menthol, sweet tobacco and chocolate. The palate is intense and fresh, with a full body and smooth tannins. Its character continues to develop in the glass and with bottle age.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C and allow approximately 10 minutes after opening. It can be enjoyed alone or paired with intensely flavoured dishes. For long-term storage, keep the bottle horizontal in a cool, dark place.
Vintage notes
The 2022 growing season began with a rainy autumn and was followed by a dry, relatively mild winter. A cooler-than-usual spring preceded a hot, dry summer. Rain in mid-August refreshed the vines, after which ripening continued under milder conditions and substantially cooler nights. Daytime temperatures also declined after mid-September, allowing the harvest to continue in sunny, windy weather.
Label / history
The first vintage was 2003, when the wine was called Guado al Melo Superiore. Its name refers to Atis, a mythical king associated with the origin of the Etruscan people. The label depicts a vine trained up a tree—the ancient “married vine” system that originated with the Etruscans, was continued by the Romans and remained part of Italian tradition for more than three millennia.
