About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The vines grow on hillsides with Eocene marl and sandstone soils and are trained mainly using the Cappuccina system. Healthy, fully ripe bunches are picked by hand into small crates to protect the berries.
Grapes
100% Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, a native Friulian variety whose name refers to the red colour of the peduncle attaching the fruit to the vine. Documentary references to Refosco in Friuli reach back to the fourteenth century.
Vinification
The fruit is carefully destemmed and crushed. Fermentation proceeds in stainless-steel vessels at controlled temperature, with maceration on the skins.
Ageing
The wine matures in small French-oak barrels, followed by bottle ageing in temperature-controlled cellars.
Technical data
The 2021 vintage is classified DOC Friuli Colli Orientali and has 14% alcohol. Available in a 0.75 L bottle.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red with purple reflections. Ripe red fruit leads the bouquet, joined by blackcurrant, blackberry and black pepper. Aeration brings out dried plum and a smoky nuance. The palate is vivid and assertive, with fully ripe, exuberant tannins, palpable texture, firm structure and a full body. Wild berries and bitter cocoa carry through a long, persistent finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16–18 °C with red meat, roasts or moderately mature cheeses.
Label / history
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso has been valued in Friuli for centuries. Fourteenth-century records mention it alongside Ribolla Gialla among the region’s prized varieties; a 1390 account also records Refosco being offered to the Dominican general.
