About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The technical sheet places the vineyards in Farra d’Isonzo, San Floriano and Cormòns within Collio DOC. The hilly Eocene soils consist of alternating sandstone and marl derived from limestone and clay. Their impermeable structure promotes surface runoff and limits erosion and standing water. The vines are trained to spurred cordon.

Grapes

Merlot.

Vinification

The grapes are picked by hand and destemmed before entering tanks equipped for red-wine vinification. Alcoholic fermentation starts immediately. Contact between skins and liquid averages 10–15 days, with the precise duration governed by the vintage and the course of extraction.

Ageing

Twelve months in oak barrels, during which malolactic fermentation takes place, followed by approximately six months in bottle.

Technical data

Collio DOC. Approximately 13% alcohol. The wine page lists 0.75 l and 1.5 l formats, while the technical sheet lists 0.75 l.

Tasting profile

The technical sheet describes a deep red colour with garnet highlights, a fresh, fruity aroma recalling red-berry jam and cherries, and a pleasant, balanced palate. The product-page text instead describes deep ruby with vivid red hues, elegant and complex red-berry aromas followed by cocoa and walnut, and a structured, smooth, full and fruity palate.

For the 2022 vintage, one published tasting note presents plum, red cherry and leafy aromas, a light body, crisp acidity, chalky tannins and an easy-drinking style. Another describes singed black pepper, cooked fruit, smoke and ash, with light body, acidity, ripe lightly framed tannins and an abrupt finish. Both recommend drinking it now.

Label / history

Varneri draws on Friulian etymology: the adjective “neri,” meaning black, has traditionally been associated with red wine.
