About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The Dü Gir vineyard is located in the municipality of Alba at 225 m above sea level and faces south. Its geological base is the S. Agata fossil formation: grey-blue marls with varying sand content and local sandy-conglomeratic intercalations. The hillside soil is a fine, calcareous Typic Ustorthent.

The vineyard was planted in 1930 at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare. The vines are trellised and Guyot-pruned. Grape yield is 7,000 kg/ha, corresponding to 4,900 L of wine per hectare.

Grapes

100% Barbera. Harvest takes place between late September and the first ten days of October. Dü Gir is the last of the Barbera vineyards to be picked.

Vinification

The grapes are destemmed and crushed. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration proceed together in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks for at least one week at 28–30°C. After racking, the wine remains on its lees for at least two months at 20–22°C while malolactic fermentation is completed.

Ageing

Refinement lasts approximately 18–20 months, partly in new 225 L barriques. The wine is bottled almost two years after harvest and matures for a further few months in the cellar before release.

Tasting profile

Deep ruby red with blackish-purple reflections. The highly fruity bouquet centres on black berries and plums, complemented by vanilla, cinnamon, cocoa and tobacco from oak ageing. The palate is notably full, yet remains rounded and well balanced.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 18°C with rich, savoury dishes, especially grilled or roasted meats and mature savoury cheeses.
