About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Bòggina B comes from Tuscan Trebbiano selected in Valdarno. The original vines were planted during the 1970s in Petrolo’s Poggio vineyard; the same original clones have since been replanted below the Bòggina vineyard. Trebbiano from Valdarno has been valued since the fourteenth century, when wines made from it were sent to the papal court in Rome and the court in Florence. The wine is estate produced and bottled and is certified organic.

Grapes

100% Trebbiano.

Vinification

For the 2023 vintage, harvest took place during the second half of September. Grapes were picked by hand into crates, with both bunches and individual berries selected on a sorting table. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts took place in tonneaux.

Ageing

The wine matures on its lees for more than 15 months in specially selected French oak tonneaux. Regular bâtonnage during the first months becomes progressively less frequent later in the élevage. No racking takes place before bottling.

Technical data

2023: 13% alcohol by volume, total acidity 6.49 g/L and pH 3.49. General production is approximately 14,000 bottles.

Tasting profile

The 2023 vintage combines floral and herbal aromas with honeysuckle, grapefruit, Meyer lemon, apricot, peach, almond, chamomile and dried herbs. Its palate is medium- to full-bodied, layered and creamy, with notes of nougat, lavender honey and beeswax. Barrel fermentation contributes a lightly phenolic, pleasantly bitter dimension, followed by a notably long and substantial finish.

Vintage notes

The 2023 technical sheet reports more than 15 months of sur-lie maturation. A published Vinous assessment in the same document describes 20–22 months in 500-litre barrels with some lees stirring. The vintage received 99 points from James Suckling, 95 from Vinous, 95 from Robert Parker Wine Advocate, 94 from Falstaff and 100 from Luca Gardini.

Label / history

Bòggina B debuted with the 2014 vintage as a tribute to the renowned white wines historically made in Valdarno. Its label carries Petrolo’s philosophical declaration connecting winegrowing, nature, culture and the transformation of nature into wine through human imagination and feeling.
