About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Bòggina C comes from Petrolo’s historic Bòggina vineyard, a Sangiovese site regarded as the estate’s finest expression of the variety. A selected part of the vineyard supplies Bòggina C, while the remaining fruit contributes to Torrione. The vineyard has progressively been replanted by sector using massal selections intended to preserve its original vine material. The selected fact sheet describes the site as approximately 5.5 ha.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese from certified-organic cultivation.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested manually into crates. Both bunches and individual berries are selected on a sorting table. Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts takes place in glazed concrete vats, accompanied by frequent, gentle manual pump-overs. Long maceration is used when conditions allow. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously in wood.
Ageing
The wine matures for approximately 16–18 months in rigorously selected French-oak vessels: 22 hl casks and 7 hl tonneaux.
Technical data
Latest detailed vintage, 2021: 13.5% alcohol by volume, total acidity of 5.97 g/l and pH 3.39. Production comprised approximately 6,500 Burgundy-format bottles and 75 magnums.
Tasting profile
The 2021 is medium-bodied, fresh and vivid, with orange peel, cherry, cherry blossom and sandalwood. A firm core of fruit carries through the finish, framed by very fine, persistent tannins. Another published assessment describes a dark ruby colour with a faint purple shimmer; intense violet, plum and blood-orange aromas; smoky and earthy nuances; and a polished, finely woven palate of juicy cherry and raspberry with a very long finish.
Serving and pairing
Its combination of elegance and muscular structure suits hard cheeses, red meats and game. The 2021 was recommended for drinking after 2027.
Vintage notes
Beginning with the 2019 vintage, the organic Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC Sangiovese Vigna Bòggina became a Riserva and received a new label. Production and analytical values vary: the 2021 yielded approximately 6,500 standard bottles and 75 magnums at 13.5% vol, 5.97 g/l total acidity and pH 3.39; the main profile gives a general production figure of approximately 5,000 bottles. The selected fact sheet also presents 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2020.
Label / history
The first vintage was 2006. Gastone Bazzocchi, grandfather of the current owners, conceived the wine as a pure expression of the estate’s finest Sangiovese vineyard. The name Bòggina is described as an Etruscan place-name derived from a family that once inhabited the hill. The Riserva label introduced with the 2019 vintage was adapted from a painting created for the wine by artist Sabina Mirri.
