About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Bòggina C Riserva comes from Bòggina, Petrolo’s historic Sangiovese vineyard. Gastone Bazzocchi, grandfather of the present owners and founder of Petrolo, established the vineyard around the beginning of the 1950s. Sections have subsequently been replanted through careful massal selection of the original clones. Part of Bòggina is selected for this single-vineyard wine, while the remainder contributes to Torrione. Petrolo regards it as its foremost Sangiovese site, valued for both its favourable growing conditions and its physical beauty.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese. The wine is certified organic, produced entirely at the estate and bottled at origin.

Vinification

The grapes are picked manually into crates in the second half of September and selected on a sorting table. Fermentation begins naturally with native yeasts in glazed concrete vats. Extraction is managed through frequent but gentle manual pump-overs, with long maceration whenever conditions permit.

Ageing

Spontaneous malolactic fermentation takes place in wood. The 2022 matured for approximately 16 months in rigorously selected French oak, divided between 22 hl barrels and 7 hl tonneaux.

Technical data

The 2022 is DOC Val d’Arno di Sopra Sangiovese Vigna Bòggina Riserva. Alcohol is 14.00% vol., total acidity 5.51 g/l and pH 3.59. Production amounted to 5,800 bottles plus larger formats.

Tasting profile

The 2022 is a structured, brooding Sangiovese. Floral and earthy aromas frame bright red fruit, while cherry and redcurrant develop into crushed flowers, tea leaf and dried spice. The warm vintage gives medium richness and added weight toward the finish. Firm beams of tannin provide shape and indicate that further cellaring should be beneficial.

Vintage notes

The Riserva designation was introduced with the 2019 vintage. The selected technical dossier documents consistent fundamentals across the represented vintages: pure Sangiovese, native-yeast fermentation in glazed concrete, spontaneous malolactic fermentation in wood and maturation in 22 hl French-oak barrels and 7 hl tonneaux. The listed maturation period is approximately 16 months for 2019–2022 and 16–18 months for the earlier sheets. Vintage production varies substantially: approximately 11,500 bottles in 2015, 8,600 in 2016, 5,053 bottles plus 120 magnums and five jeroboams in 2018, 3,000 in 2019, 6,800 in 2020, 6,500 bottles plus 75 magnums in 2021, and 5,800 bottles plus larger formats in 2022.

Label / history

Bòggina C originated in Gastone Bazzocchi’s ambition to create an important pure Sangiovese. The first vintage was 2006. Since the 2019 vintage, its transition to Riserva has been marked by a new label based on a painting created specifically for the wine by artist Sabina Mirri. Its identity joins the historic Tuscan tradition of Sangiovese with meticulous contemporary vineyard and cellar work.
