About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Campo Lusso is Petrolo’s single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Its 0.5-hectare vineyard occupies a natural terrace below the medieval Galatrona watchtower, facing the woodland of the Chianti Hills and surrounded by forest. The site lies at approximately 500 metres above sea level; the wine page gives a range of 450–500 metres. Its loamy ground contains abundant rock and living organic matter.
The vineyard was planted on 11 September 2001 at high density and comprises approximately 5,000 vines trained as goblet-shaped bush vines. The 2022 yield was approximately 1 kg per plant.
Campo Lusso is certified organic. Vineyard management follows dry-farming principles without fertilisation or tillage. Permanent grass cover is managed by mulching, synthetic pesticides are not used, and canopy work is performed manually through targeted interventions. Severe pruning and bunch thinning are largely unnecessary in balanced mature vineyards, while additional canopy management is reserved for more difficult seasons.
Grapes
100% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Vinification
For the 2022 vintage, harvesting took place during the first days of October. The grapes were picked manually into crates and selected on a sorting table. Natural fermentation with native yeasts occurred in glazed concrete vats, accompanied by gentle and frequent manual pump-overs.
Ageing
Spontaneous malolactic fermentation took place in wood. The 2022 matured for approximately 18 months in rigorously selected new French oak barriques, with regular bâtonnage of the fine lees during the first few months.
Technical data
The 2022 has 13.5% alcohol, total acidity of 5.78 g/L and a pH of 3.6. Production comprised 2,300 standard bottles, 130 magnums, 12 jéroboams and 3 mathusalems.
Tasting profile
The 2022 combines blackcurrant and dark-fruit flavours with notes recalling graphite, ink, pencil shavings and spice. It is medium-bodied, focused and energetic, with a polished yet intense texture. Ripe, generous fruit and chalky tannins give richness without sacrificing the freshness associated with its elevated site.
Vintage notes
The current 2022 fact-sheet specifies approximately 18 months in new French oak barriques and bâtonnage during the first few months. The general wine page describes maturation as approximately 20–22 months with bâtonnage over the first six months, reflecting a different published élevage description.
Campo Lusso carried the IGT Toscana or IGT Toscana Cabernet Sauvignon classification in several earlier releases. The latest published vintage, 2022, is DOC Val d’Arno di Sopra Cabernet Sauvignon Vigna Campo Lusso.
Label / history
The first vintage was 2004. The name comes from a traditional expression used by local farmers for the estate’s most beautiful field—a field considered a true luxury, hence “Campo Lusso.” Beginning with the 2018 vintage, artwork created with artist Sabina Mirri replaced the former minimalist red-and-black label.
