About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from the Serra Ferdinandea vineyard, surrounded by forest, at 400–450 metres above sea level on the western edge of the Sicani Mountains, between Sciacca and Sambuca di Sicilia. The vineyard overlooks the stretch of sea where the island of Ferdinandea rose from the water for a few days in 1831. The landscape was formed by the erosion and transformation of limestone rock. The land has not been ploughed for centuries, and Mediterranean and mountain environments meet in a complex agricultural ecosystem rich in plant and animal life, where microbial life has never been disturbed. Archaeological finds appear to suggest that the area holds some of the oldest vine roots in the Mediterranean, if not the oldest.
The grapes are grown according to organic farming principles and the SOStain protocol. Soils, altitude and growing methods are chosen to bring out minerality and freshness.
Vinification
Harvest is by hand in the first week of September, into 14 kg crates. At the winery the berries are chilled overnight to 6–8 °C, carefully sorted, and gently pressed without destemming in a non-rotating Wilmes press. The must is settled in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and fermented in the same tanks.
Ageing
The wine is aged on its fine lees before being filtered.
Label / history
Serra Ferdinandea is a project of Planeta and the Oddo family of France, partners united by friendship and a passion for good wine. It renews the historic Sicilian-French connection, including the exchange of grape varieties and techniques, and adds a French touch to Planeta's knowledge of Sicilian viticulture. The wine is part of the Ab Insula collection, whose name means "from the island". The first vintage of the Rosato was released in 2020.
