About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from a southwest-facing vineyard with red sand, large stones and clay. In Bolgheri, the hot Tuscan sun is moderated by cool sea breezes, while the surrounding hills shelter the vines from northerly winds. The local soils and climate are somewhat reminiscent of Bordeaux.
Poggio al Tesoro has around 70 hectares divided among three vineyards: Via Bolgherese, Le Grottine and Le Sondraie. The source does not identify which of these supplies the wine.
Grapes
The estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon plantings use selected clones.
Vinification
The grapes are picked and sorted by hand, first in the vineyard and again at the winery. The red varieties are fermented separately before blending. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at 26–28 °C, followed by malolactic fermentation in barriques.
Ageing
The wine matures for eight months in one-year-old French barriques made from Allier oak.
Tasting profile
Fruity and spicy, with fresh aromas, lively acidity and a silky texture. The structure is warm and powerful while remaining balanced.
Label / history
Poggio al Tesoro was established as a joint project between the Valpolicella producer Allegrini and Leonardo LoCascio, president of the American importer Winebow, with Bolgheri chosen as the estate’s home.
