About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow in Maremma, in the Morellino di Scansano area, 16 km from the Mediterranean Sea. The vineyards lie at 170–300 m above sea level, face south and southwest, and have stony limestone and clay soils.
Vinification
The harvested grapes are strictly selected. Fermentation proceeds slowly at a controlled temperature in small, open stainless-steel vats, with maceration and gentle punch-downs. The wine is bottled without filtration.
Ageing
The wine matures for 18 months in oak barrels, followed by two years in bottle.
Tasting profile
Powerful and complex.
Label / history
Poggio Verrano was established in Tuscany by Francesco Bolla in 2000 as a project devoted to red wines expressing the terroir of Maremma Toscana. He acquired 27 ha in Maremma and built an underground winery and cellars, covered with vines.
The label bears an ancient Etruscan symbol: a winged triangular pendant containing the bust of a bird. It pays tribute to the Etruscan civilization that was present in Tuscany and Maremma around 500 BC and strongly influenced the region. Etruscan archaeological sites survive near Poggio Verrano.
