About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The wine comes from estate vineyards at Gavorrano in the province of Grosseto, planted at 90 m a.s.l. on medium-textured, clay-rich soil with abundant stones. The vines are trained to spurred cordon at 5,900 plants per hectare, and the stated grape yield is 55 q/ha (5.5 t/ha).
Grapes
50% Sangioveto, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot.
Vinification
Merlot is harvested at the end of August, followed by Sangioveto and Cabernet Sauvignon in mid-September. The grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and undergo malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
Maturation lasts 18 months in barriques, 50% new, followed by nine months in bottle.
Technical data
Maremma Toscana DOC. A medium-structured red with ageing capacity. Available in 0.75 L, 1.5 L and 3 L formats.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red, with broad aromas of red fruit. The palate has substantial texture, soft, rounded tannins and a long, enveloping finish.
Serving and pairing
Pairs with richly flavoured first courses and game such as venison, wild boar and hare. Wild duck is another recommended match.
Label / history
Le Sughere di Frassinello is the estate’s second label, combining Sangioveto with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in an Italian-French blend. The first vintage was 2004. By its fifth vintage, the wine had entered Wine Spectator’s Top 100.
