About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards are in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, on gravelly soils containing sandy marl and sandy alluvial deposits. Since the 2020 partnership with Lea Winery, the project has drawn on 100 hectares of vineyards tended by an experienced team of winegrowers. The estate is certified under SQNPI, the National Quality System for Integrated Production, which promotes economically viable, low-impact farming, and its vineyards are being converted fully to organic viticulture.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and gently crushed. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 18 °C.
Ageing
The wine rests on its fine lees for six months before bottling.
Tasting profile
Elegant in character.
Serving and pairing
Suitable as an aperitif and with simple dishes, light appetizers, fish, Italian pasta, and risotto with vegetables, mussels or seafood.
Vintage notes
The 2020 winter in Friuli-Venezia Giulia was very mild, without sharp temperature changes. Although the mild March suggested early budding, Pinot Grigio began bud development only in the first days of April. Fairly dry conditions in April and May favoured flowering, with the Pinot Grigio plots reaching full bloom in the final week of May. June was the wettest summer month, but steady air movement kept the vines healthy. Rainy spells then alternated regularly with dry periods that were not excessively hot, allowing the grapes to retain an ideal balance of sugar and acidity as they ripened.
Label / history
Poderi di Carlo was created to share the winemaking traditions of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Its wines bear the name of Carlo Primosich, founder of the family business, who left Collio in the late nineteenth century with carts carrying large wooden barrels in search of a better future. The name Carlo has particular significance for the Primosich family and is passed to one heir in each generation, alongside the family’s winemaking tradition.
Poderi di Carlo began working with Lea Winery in 2020.
