About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The Chia family planted the vineyard in Maremma on a river plateau extending between Monte Amiata and the Tuscan archipelago. Red clay covers the surface, while rounded stones form a deeper layer. Air currents alternate between the sea and the mountains according to the time of day. Warm daytime conditions are moderated by sea breezes; during the evening, cool, humid air descends from the hills, creating marked day–night temperature changes.
Mediterranean scrub surrounds the vines, including thyme, wild sage, plum, wild pear, Etruscan santolina, broom and wildflowers. The setting and temperature pattern allow the grapes to retain natural acidity while developing complexity and length.
Grapes
100% Syrah. The variety is naturally low-yielding in this vineyard.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand and vinified in Montalcino.
Ageing
The wine is matured in oak, then bottled and aged at Castello Romitorio.
Technical data
Toscana IGT. Production of the 2021 vintage was limited to 2,900 bottles.
Tasting profile
The 2021 is deep, dark and nearly opaque purple-red. Its complex, spicy aroma combines red pepper, juicy plum, thyme, mocha and cocoa, alongside blackberry preserve, cured-meat nuances and exotic spice. The palate is silky and smooth, with rich fruit, chocolate tones and sweet tannins. Medium-plus in intensity, it remains elegant and taut, finishing with considerable length.
Vintage notes
The 2021 was the first release and the newest addition to the Castello Romitorio range at the time of publication. It received 94/100 from Othmar Kiem and Simon Staffler and 93/100 from Monica Larner. The latter recommended enjoying it while its primary fruit remains fresh.
Label / history
The wine emerged from approximately twenty years of research into grape varieties, clones and new plantings, followed by a moment of inspiration. It was conceived as a pure, energetic expression connecting Tuscan farming traditions with Maremma’s terroir.
The label features the artwork Leave the Artist Alone. It reflects the idea that artists and winemakers alike require time, imagination, inspiration and a calm, secure place in which to develop their work.
