About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The fruit comes from estate-owned vineyards and selected historic growers in the Chianti Classico area with whom Ruffino maintains long-standing partnerships. The vineyards lie at 250–450 m a.s.l. Their soils vary but are predominantly silty clay and rich in limestone. The broader vineyard description also highlights clay, limestone and an abundant presence of galestro, a rock associated with Chianti Classico.

Grapes

Latest published technical-sheet vintage (2021): 80% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot.

Vinification

Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Pump-overs assist fermentation and skin contact, while maceration lasts between 10 and 20 days depending on the vintage.

Ageing

The varieties are matured separately for at least 12 months: Sangiovese in large Slavonian oak casks and the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in barriques and tonneaux. The wine then spends another nine months in concrete and three months in bottle before release.

Technical data

Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG. Recommended serving temperature: 16–18 °C.

Tasting profile

Ruby red. The elegant, complex bouquet opens with violet, cherry, wild berries and plum, followed by nuances of tobacco, clove and eucalyptus. The palate is balanced and firmly structured, with delicate tannins, vibrant acidity and a long, persistent finish.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–18 °C. Pair with traditional Tuscan cooking, especially grilled meats, fresh or filled pasta served with substantial sauces, and game.

Vintage notes

The 2021 growing season brought well-distributed spring rainfall and optimal conditions during harvest.

Label / history

Riserva Ducale has been produced since 1927, though its story begins in 1890. After tasting the wine in Pontassieve, the Duke of Aosta selected Ruffino as a supplier to the royal household. The wine was later named in his honour. Riserva Ducale is among the small number of wines permitted to use “Riserva” as part of the wine name because it anticipated the reserve concept before the classification was created.
