About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
This estate cru draws on selected vineyards around Pietrafitta and Canale in Castellina in Chianti, with the technical specification identifying Casanuova di Pietrafitta as its vineyard area. Pietrafitta occupies the higher part of Castellina at an average elevation of 530 m. Its cool, ventilated conditions and north-eastern exposure support even ripening. Surrounding woodland preserves local biodiversity and shelters the vines.
The medium-textured soil is rich in clay and the rock fragments associated with the Alberese area. The vines are 10–35 years old, while the estate description gives an average age of 20 years. Planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare and the average yield is 1 kg per vine. Both spur and cane pruning are employed.
Grapes
Sangiovese with Canaiolo and Malvasia Nera. The oldest, best-exposed vineyards supply the selected Sangiovese component.
