About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Costa Bruna comes from a 2 ha Barbera vineyard situated within the Roncaglie cru in Barbaresco. The Colla family discovered this old-vine parcel after acquiring Roncaglie. Its exact age cannot be established, although surviving evidence confirms that the oldest vines are at least 90 years old. Recorded planting years are 1930, 1995 and 2005. The wine combines Barbera's freshness and drinkability with the elegance associated with the Langhe's marly soil.

Grapes

100% Barbera.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and crushed. Maceration on the skins lasts 10–12 days, with a maximum temperature of 28–30°C. Malolactic fermentation is completed before winter.

Ageing

Approximately one year in oak casks.

Technical data

  • Alcohol: 13–14% vol.
  • Total acidity: 5.5–6 g/L
  • Dry extract: 27–29 g/L

Tasting profile

Violaceous purple-red in colour. The vinous, complex bouquet combines wild strawberry and cherry with floral and spicy notes. The palate is full-bodied and driven by fresh acidity, remaining enjoyable both in its early years and at maturity.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 15–17°C in a fairly large, tapered glass. A versatile partner for pasta, soups and savoury flans; it is also suitable for preparing sauces and slow-cooked meat dishes.

Label / history

Known as “the lady of Roncaglie,” Costa Bruna entered the Colla family's story almost by chance. When the family acquired the Roncaglie cru, they found this historic Barbera vineyard nested within the property.
