About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Roncaglie is presented as one of Barbaresco’s earliest recognized true crus and one of the denomination’s most highly regarded sites. Its position on the hillside rising toward Treiso has a south to southwest exposure and lies at 240–280 m above sea level. The vineyard comprises blocks planted in 1970, 1980, 1995 and 2010. Its historically valued parcels regularly produce balanced grapes associated with the elegance and harmony expected of Barbaresco.

Grapes

100% Nebbiolo.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand, destemmed and crushed. Skin maceration lasts 12–15 days, with the temperature reaching a maximum of approximately 30°C. Malolactic fermentation is completed before winter.

Ageing

In spring, the wine is transferred to Slavonian oak casks for 12–14 months.

Technical data

  • Alcohol: 13–14% vol.
  • Total acidity: 5–5.5 g/L as tartaric acid.
  • Dry extract: 26–30 g/L on the wine page and 27–30 g/L in the technical sheet.

Tasting profile

Deep garnet red. The exuberant, complex bouquet combines blackberry, spices, woodland undergrowth, dog rose and violet. The palate is rich, enveloping and intense while retaining the elegance associated with the Roncaglie cru. It has a distinctive yet approachable character and an exceptionally long finish shaped by velvety tannins, together with substantial ageing potential.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 15–17°C in a very large wine glass. Suitable throughout a meal and particularly well matched with red meats and feathered game.

Label / history

Roncaglie is described as one of the first genuine Barbaresco crus. Local farming tradition historically assigned grapes from this estate greater value than fruit from other parcels because of the site’s consistent ability to produce balanced grapes suited to an elegant, harmonious expression of Barbaresco.
