Colline Teramane Montepulciano d’Abruzzo
5 cantine e 1 vino. The Colline Teramane are the hills of the province of Teramo in northern Abruzzo, from the coastal ridges inland to the foot of the Gran Sasso and the Monti della Laga. They were laid down as sea floor at the end of the Tertiary and start of the Quaternary, filling the Adriatic basin with clays and silts that are looser near the coast. The slopes are mostly gentle and well exposed, suited to vines and olives, which hold the soil against erosion. Continua a leggere ↓

Colline Teramane Montepulciano d’Abruzzo in breve
Rain ranges from 700 mm on the coast to 800 inland, heaviest between October and December and scarcest in July. The climate is temperate, warming in summer to 24–25 °C on average, and the nearness of the Gran Sasso and the Laga brings cool air, constant ventilation and big differences between day and night.
This was the first DOCG for Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, and it is a stricter version of it: at least 90 per cent Montepulciano, with up to ten per cent Sangiovese, from hill or upland vineyards no higher than 550 metres, cropped at no more than 9.5 tonnes a hectare. A Riserva ages at least three years, one of them in oak or chestnut casks. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo became a DOC in 1968, and its Colline Teramane a DOCG in 2003.
