Romagna Albana
1 cantina e 8 vini. Albana has found in Romagna practically its only home in Italy. Whether the Romans brought it is not known, but around 1300 the agronomist Pier de' Crescenzi already judged it better than any other grape at Forlì and throughout Romagna, and in the early twentieth century Mariano Savelli of the royal chemistry laboratory in Forlì mapped where it did best: the hills of Dozza near Imola, Riolo, Faenza, Terra del Sole and Castrocaro, Bertinoro, Cesena, Longiano and Montiano. Romagna Albana in breve
Later studies tied its best wines to the Spungone, a yellowish ridge of Pliocene calcareous sandstone full of fossils that runs from Faenza to Cesena and stands out as the first line of hills seen from the Via Emilia, harder than the clays around it.
Romagna Albana must be at least 95 per cent Albana and is made dry, off-dry, sweet and passito. For the passito the grapes may dry until the 30th of March after the harvest, reaching at least 284 grams of sugar a litre; it is released from the first of September of the following year, the Riserva from the first of December. Families once hung bunches in their lofts to make passito for baptisms and weddings, and as altar wine. Albana di Romagna became a DOC in 1967 and, in 1987, Italy's first white DOCG; it has been called Romagna Albana since 2011.
