Vermentino di Gallura
5 cantine e 19 vini. Gallura, the north-east corner of Sardinia, is granite country. Its bones formed some 300 million years ago in the Hercynian mountain-building, and near the coast the rock is worn by wind and water into smooth, strange shapes among dense Mediterranean scrub, while inland there are woods of oak, cork oak and wild olive. The DOCG covers the communes of Gallura, among them Arzachena, Olbia, Berchidda, Calangianus and Luras. Continua a leggere ↓

Vermentino di Gallura in breve
Vineyards must stand on soils formed from weathered granite, no higher than 500 metres. Over the granite lie coarse sands, sometimes mixed with clay; the coarser the texture, the deeper the roots go, and the sandy, stony soils give the most scented wines. Sun and near-constant wind do the rest.
Vermentino di Gallura must be at least 95 per cent Vermentino, cropped at no more than ten tonnes a hectare, or nine for the Superiore. It is made still, frizzante and sparkling, as a late harvest and as a passito from grapes dried until they reach 15 per cent potential alcohol. The Superiore and late-harvest wines are released from the 15th of January after the harvest, the passito from the first of May. Vermentino di Gallura became a DOCG in 1996 — the first and still the only one in Sardinia.
