Sardegna in breve

Two grapes dominate. Cannonau — the same variety as Grenache — covers 35 per cent of the vineyards and makes the island's best-known red; Vermentino covers 28 per cent and its best-known white. Carignano in the Sulcis and Vernaccia di Oristano, aged under a film of yeast, are among its other distinctive wines. Sardinia's output swings widely from year to year, but 2022 matched its ten-year average of 684,000 hectolitres from 26,700 hectares. It makes twice as much red as white, most of it at DOC level.

The island has one DOCG, Vermentino di Gallura, recognised in 1996, and seventeen DOCs, including Cannonau di Sardegna and Vermentino di Sardegna, which cover the whole island, along with fifteen IGPs.
