Terroir
Gallura setting
The vineyards lie in Gallura, within the municipality of Arzachena. The landscape is shaped by the meeting of land and sea, with Mediterranean maquis, maritime influence, sunshine and persistent wind all forming part of the estate’s conception of place. Sea breezes reach the vines, while granite and sandstone are recurring elements of the terrain.
Soils
Sandy soils created by the slow weathering of granite predominate across the named vineyard areas. Individual production sites add further variation. The source soils associated with Sciala are shallow sandy loams with abundant coarse gravel and naturally little organic matter. Their drainage, limited fertility and restrained vine vigour support balanced water and nutrient availability. The Branu source soils are likewise shallow and well drained, with a medium texture tending toward sand.
The area associated with Montidimola has medium-textured, granite-derived soil with more structure than nearby coastal sites. Its position beside a natural ventilation corridor toward the Strait of Bonifacio brings steady winds, moderates average temperatures and increases the difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. These conditions encourage slow, balanced and comparatively late ripening.
Vinificazione
The vineyards cover approximately 70 ha across seven areas in Arzachena. Sustainable agriculture and the preservation of Gallura for future generations form part of the estate’s stated mission.
Grapes are selected carefully from the estate vineyards. In the shallow, gravelly source soils associated with Sciala, minimal soil intervention allows organic matter to accumulate gradually, helps balance water and nutrient availability and limits excessive vine vigour. Another documented source area has shallow, well-drained soil and yields of approximately 75–80 q/ha.
The Spridda holding integrates viticulture with uncultivated habitat: 10 ha are planted with Vermentino and another 10 ha remain under Mediterranean maquis and woodland. This preservation of native vegetation complements the winery’s broader commitment to the landscape and biodiversity.
The winery combines artisanal handling with innovative technology. Grapes are carefully selected from the estate vineyards and processed with the aim of retaining an identifiable expression of Gallura’s climate, aromas and landscape.
The production building is designed as an energy-efficient structure closely integrated with its surroundings. Transparent façades admit views and natural light, while walls made from local stone visually connect the cellar to the land. Technological innovation, sustainability and ethical production are treated as linked principles, with both the building and production activity intended to safeguard the surrounding territory and biodiversity.
Filosofia
Expression of Gallura
Vigne Surrau’s central aim is to produce wines that express Gallura through its climate, aromas, maritime influence and long cultural history. The vine is understood as capable of adapting to its site and communicating the character of the ground in which it grows. Granite, sandstone, sea, sunlight and wind are therefore treated as essential components of authenticity rather than merely as scenery.
Quality and technique
The estate defines its philosophy as an uncompromising pursuit of quality. Carefully selected grapes and artisanal skill are combined with innovative technology; tradition and modern equipment are presented as complementary means of translating the vineyards into wine.
Custodianship
Environmental respect is an integral part of the mission. Sustainable agricultural choices, energy-efficient architecture, biodiversity protection and the retention of Mediterranean vegetation are intended to preserve the original harmony of the landscape for future generations.
Hospitality and beauty
Beauty is treated as an experience to be shared through wine, vineyard walks, art and hospitality. The transparent, welcoming winery is intended to offer visitors a broader encounter with Gallura rather than a tasting alone.
