Vineyard and terroir
The fruit is grown in Aia Vecchia’s vineyards in Tuscany. The estate lies between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, and its vineyards have a sunny position and a favourable microclimate. It owns 48 ha of vineyards, including 30 ha within Bolgheri DOC; the plantings are predominantly red varieties, including Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Grapes
The blend comprises 95% Sangiovese and 5% Merlot.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested at optimal ripeness and undergo a short maceration before fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks.
Ageing
The wine matures for four months in the same stainless-steel tanks, followed by two months in bottle in the winery’s cellars.
Label / history
The estate takes its name from a historic 16th-century castle on the property. Aia Vecchia produces 220,000 bottles of wine annually.
