Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The wine comes from the Casòn Hirschprunn Estate in Magrè, at 230–360 m. The vineyards lie on sandy, rocky soils containing dolomitic limestone. The estate was acquired in 1991 and encompasses more than 30 hectares of vineyards together with several historic buildings.
Grapes
Tannat and other varieties. Tannat forms the backbone of the blend; exact proportions are not specified. The variety was first planted at the estate for trials in the 1980s and retains high acidity under Alto Adige conditions.
Vinification
The grape mash ferments spontaneously in large casks, with a portion of whole bunches included.
Ageing
The wine spends several months in small and large casks, followed by approximately one year in bottle.
Technical data
The 2021 vintage has 12.5% alcohol by volume.
Tasting profile
Cherry red with pink highlights. The lightly aromatic nose offers plum, blackberry, leather, tea and woody notes. The palate is medium-bodied, juicy, fruity and fresh, with a refined bitter accent.
Serving and pairing
Suitable with roasted or grilled red meat, lamb, venison and cheese. Recommended drinking window: 3–10 years.
Label / history
Concern about climate change prompted experimental planting of new varieties at Casòn Hirschprunn beginning in the 1980s. Tannat, then unconventional in Alto Adige, proved particularly successful and became the principal component of CASÒN Rosso.
