Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from selected parcels of the Löwengang Estate in Magrè, at 230–330 m above sea level. Magrè stands on an alluvial cone of dolomitic debris created by recurrent flooding over millions of years. Its sandy, gravelly and strongly calcareous soils suit Chardonnay. Sunny mornings support vine metabolism, while afternoon breezes from the Favogna Gorge lower temperatures and help preserve acidity and aroma.
The oldest Chardonnay vines at Löwengang are 65–75 years old. New plantings were propagated through sélection massale from vigorous, characterful vines. Some are trained on traditional pergolas to shade the grapes and retain freshness as temperatures rise. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically and are Demeter certified.
Grapes
100% Chardonnay.
Vinification
Each year, selected barrels from individual Löwengang parcels are retained for extended maturation. Fermentation is spontaneous and takes place in oak barriques. INEDITO II brings together nine vintages, from 2013 through 2021, as a new perpetuelle-style composition.
Ageing
The wines remain on their lees in the fermentation barriques for individually chosen periods. The oldest component, from 2013, matured in cask for nine years; maturation across the composition therefore extends up to nine years.
Technical data
Brilliant gold-yellow in colour. Alcohol is 13.5% vol. and total acidity is 5.3 g/L.
Tasting profile
The profile moves between reduction and oxidation, freshness and depth. It is simultaneously full-bodied and incisive, with a layered, lively character, pronounced saline verticality and a very long finish. Extended barrique maturation is evident without diminishing the wine’s freshness and dynamism.
Vintage notes
INEDITO II combines selected barrels from 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. The first INEDITO assemblage, released in 2017, united the 2013, 2014 and 2015 vintages.
Label / history
LÖWENGANG Chardonnay began with an experiment in 1983 and became central to the estate’s quality development. The name INEDITO—Italian for something new or previously unpublished—expresses the creation of an independent wine through the repeated combination of parcels, vintages and different periods in cask. The Löwengang estate traces its recorded history to the Gaun family in 1369; after the family was raised to knighthood in 1674, the title “von und zu Löwengang” also became the estate’s name. Alois III acquired the estate in 1934, and Alois IV transferred the company headquarters from Bolzano to Magrè in 1995.
