Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from selected parcels of the Löwengang Estate in Magrè, at 230–330 metres above sea level. Sandy, gravelly soils contain a high proportion of limestone. Parts of the vineyard are approximately 145 years old and rank among Alto Adige’s oldest plantings.
Grapes
Carménère, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Count Melchiori planted these varieties in the Löwengang parcels around 1875. Massal selection has subsequently been used to propagate this old genetic material and extend the vineyard.
Vinification
The grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation on the skins, partly as whole bunches. The wine then spends several months in small and large wooden casks.
Ageing
Approximately one year of bottle maturation follows the period in wood.
Technical data
The 2021 vintage has 11.5% alcohol by volume.
Tasting profile
Cherry red with ruby highlights. The fairly pronounced, gently aromatic nose combines raspberry, blackberry and cherry with woody, spicy and earthy nuances. Full-bodied and balanced on the palate, with precision and a refined bitter edge.
Serving and pairing
Suited to roasted or grilled red meat, lamb, venison and cheese. Optimal drinking maturity is 5–20 years.
Label / history
The Lageder family acquired the Löwengang Estate and its vineyards in 1934, when the oldest vines were already about 60 years old. The historic mixed planting preserves material first established around 1875.
